Lance Armstrong's 'Thank You' Party & The ACL Festival 2005 - Link
Every year for the past few years Austin has been the gathering place of tens of thousands of people and some of the most popular and well-known bands in the world. This year we were privileged to see some great acts, including: The Black Crowes, The Allman Bros. Band, Blues Traveler, Jet, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, Buddy Guy, and Oasis. There were tons of people and it was very hot...so hot that it wasn't uncommon for people just to faint on the ground around you while watching an act. Add to the fact that the ground was being trampled by tens of thousands of feet and that this caused huge clouds of dust to float around the entire area (because of the drought that had been affecting the area the entire summer) and you'll see why hundreds of people had to be sent to the medical tent. I even felt sick after it was done, undoubtedly from inhaling so much dirt the previous two days. But I would definitely do it all over again!
The next week Lance Armstong, of Tour De France fame, threw a party for the entire city of Austin. In part because of his appreciation to his adopted hometown of Austin's support over the last seven Tour De France wins, he wanted to give back to the people who had given so much to him over the years. So he presented a concert featuring himself and his children, the mayor of Austin, Bob Sneider, and Sheryl Crow (his fiance). It was a very informal event; many showed up to see it and the musical performances were top notch. Armstrong even played the drums during one set! Amazing guy.
